I've been listening to the ANNA (1967) soundtrack nonstop ever since watching the movie. Serge Gainsbourg never does wrong and Anna Karina's voice is fun and cute. Tomorrow is the end of the week (!!!) and I plan on taking my flash out on the weekend and documenting the night's events.

As requested, this is a post of introduction to myself. My name is Severn. I'm a fifteen year old high school sophmore. I live in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. I'm obsessed with typology. (Carl Jung is my homeboy, and I'm an INTP... which is basically a completely oblivious, socially-inept genius. Although I wouldn't say "genius" describes me truthfully.) I dabble in photography (hence the blog), writing (I'm considering going to Ryerson for journalism), and overusing brackets (ha ha ha). For fun, I translate French songs into English and vice a versa. Morrissey's "Come Back to Camden" was a bitch to translate.

I'm also horrible at writing about myself. Honestly, I googled "how to write about one's self" before I began this post. It wasn't a useful or fruitful search, so I suppose I'm left to my own defences. I like a tonne of different kinds of music, despite how picky I am. My favourite musicians are Serge Gainsbourg, The Smiths, Joy Division, The Radio Dept, Grizzly Bear, Beach House, Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, Fleet Foxes, Bob Dylan, New Order and lots of French ye-ye pop.

As far as movies go, I like films by Harmony Korine, Wes Anderson, Hitchcock, Kubrick, Sofia Coppola and David Lynch.
My favourite photographers are included in my Link list, if you care to know.

Literature. I love Haruki Murakami, Ayn Rand, Philip K Dick, George Orwell, and Jack Kerouac.

I keep this blog because I like having a blog to share and network. Whatever blogs are for, exactly.

I cannot believe it. I am devastated. I feel indifferent towards almost every person in my life.
It's horrible. Yet, it's clarity and simplicity is comforting. And nerve-racking.

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle has absolutely blown my mind, and I'm not even half way through it. Afterwards, I plan on diving into Kafka on the Shore, Norwegian Wood, and Sputnik Sweetheart. Haruki Murakami is amazing.

My laptop got sick on Sunday and won't be home from the computer-hospital until Saturday. Anyways, with the lack of computer in my life (I'm on my parent's right now), I am experiencing much more free time. I just began reading The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Murakami, which is incredible so far. Tomorrow Alex is lending me Hey Nostradamus by Douglas Coupland and on Friday Henry is lending me Watchmen! So I have tons of time for books and photography. And speaking of my favorite pastime, I have new photos!

I'M A GENIUS ALL THE TIME

I have developed no photos since my last post and therefore, have nothing to show you, unless I feel like digging up something old. Which I might, but let me write first.

I have come to terms with the fact that I am not in the slightest bit punctual.
I am only punctual when I need be, like when writing persuasive essays which my English 10 teacher praises and praises like he just discovered God and inhales and consumes as if his life is dependent on reading my horrible, generic persuasive essays which honestly bore the me to tears but I don't mind them much because they are going to get me an A in English 10.(Whereas that run-on sentence will not get me an A in English 10.)

But besides trying to have a somewhat-intelligent conversation with someone I like but making no sense whatsoever (although it is crystal clear in my own mind), I think I'll be okay. Speaking and conversing have never been my strong points.(Ha-ha-ha, points! Punctual? Get it?)

I'm also not very funny.

But I can take a semi-decent photo. Which, thankfully, is what I'm aiming for.

My science teacher gave me five rolls of expired film today. As a gift, or something. His name is Sheldon and he was born in Port Alberni. His sons are really cute. I bought a skylight filter yesterday. I'd like to use it, but the Vancouver autumn weather is so dreary!

THE PENTAX K1000 CAME

So I bought a cheap roll of 12 exposures and used it up. While waiting for the photos to develop, I talked to the guy at my local (and pretty good) camera store about lenses and filters and bought a used polarizing filter for two dollars. I then got to photos, took 'em home and immediately scanned them.

Asides from my trip to the camera store, I spent the day nursing my post-Halloween hangover and watching all five installments of "The Best Videos of the '80s" by Vh1.

I find I'm really superb at chemistry. I suppose it's all the rules and formulas, it's all just so easy. I don't mind it much either!

Halloween is real soon and I'm dressing up as a mime. I'm going to try real hard to not speak throughout school, but not talking while out gallivanting isn't quite as plausible. At least I'll be able to say I tried!

Pentax scheduled to arrive in 2 days. Yesssssssssss.
I also found out that I'm going to the Mayan Riviera for Christmas to celebrate Mom's recovery!

I find waking up hungover to the sounds of Brahms, Maher, Debussy, Chopin, Phillip Glass, Chihei Hatakeyama , Dustin O'Halloran, Satie, and Library Tapes is way better than Akron/Family, Animal Collective, Beach House, Great Lake Swimmers, Grizzly Bear, Karl Blau, The Microphones, The Mountain Goats, Phosporescent, She & Him, and The Zombies.

Fact of the matter: I changed the playlist I fall asleep and arise to. It was a good decision on my part.

Other than that riveting news, I'm staying in tonight, alone, treating myself to Psycho and Rear Window.

NEW PURCHASE

I just bought a Pentax K1000 with a SMC Pentax-A 50mm 1:2 lens off of eBay. I'm totally psyched. My dad learned with this camera when he was a student and I now know what camera he used to take all the great photos he took in school! It's fully manual and I cannot wait to take some photos when it arrives.

In February, my classes at Arts Umbrella start. I'm awfully excited for the course I'm taking, it's just a shame my own school doesn't offer an elective like it. Oh well! Now I don't have to worry. Mmm... darkroom chemicals... I can smell the fumes now! The course is called Photography: Projects and Portfolio. The course focuses on b&w, something I have not ventured into as of yet. (But can you blame me? I only bought my first film compact in August!) Anyways, I'm sure it'll be a total blast that I'll learn a lot from.

My four disposables are done and my Konica is almost there. I fear the price of developing and printing them all.

School tomorrow. Woo.

Now I can spend countless hours watching adult men act ridiculously. Yay!!!

I'm still grounded. This morning I've just been receiving and replying to texts, refusing invites. I hate that. But I love watching MTV2 and eating Girl Guide cookies alone in my house.

Right now I'm just living towards the weekend where I can be a reckless teenager again. I usually hate it, but now that I've experienced a long break from it... It's time to be stupid.

3. I have to wear two sets of dental elastics at night now. I couldn't fall asleep last night because my mouth was all tangled in latex rings. Terrible.

This past week has been really exhausting. I've managed to sleep in until eleven the past two days though, which is really nice. I'm picking up my photos from the Konica tomorrow and I'm preeeetty anxious to see how they turned out. I'm also considering attending the "Biggest Part in the Universe" tomorrow, but we'll see.

I think I've made a mistake re-accepting an unacceptable thing back into my life.

1. "Night School Programs office, how may I help you?" times 100.
2. Getting dirty in the garden

This has been so far, in retrospect, the worst year of my fifteen.
Although I expect it'll be looked more fondly upon than the middle school years.
Can I make a list without making people feel guilty? How would I know, what should I care? If so, you're all too sensitive. Build a nice wall between yourself and emotions. It makes things a hell of a lot easier and I would know. I think I'll pass on the list. I just tried writing one but I wasn't sure on how to word it and therefore decided to just not make a list to avoid making a really dumb list.

MY 12 YEAR MOLARS ARE 3 YEARS LATE

Our DVD player broke. So, on our way to Seattle we visited a suburban Walmart (the people inside were simply tragic) and bought a PlayStation 3 for four hundred dollars. Supposedly it's the highest-ranked Blu-Ray player out there. I don't really care. We bought the Sonic the Hedgehog game as well and it's proving to be mildly entertaining. I'm actually really good at video games.

I am feeling so uninspired. Being trapped on a family trip you wish you could have skipped is torturous. Being trapped when I truly loathe my parent's best friends is equally so.

School starts in three days and I'm happy but only for the reasons that I can escape my house for six hours a day and y'know... converse with people again. I'm such a hermit.

Finally got my disposable cameras developed. The photos turned out well, although the drug store decided to withold 11 photos.

That is my old elementary school. I never acknowledged the view whilst attending school there. Anyways, I'm thinking of deleting some of the really dull, whiny, earlier entries. Fresh slate. Also, a new blog address. I know I've changed it a total of... four or five times since November, but.... yeah. Sorry. I've pretty much made it impossible to have regular readers, I know.

So: The cottage was a real joy. Not the same, but still enjoyable. I left my iPod at Joel and Mary's and I really wish I had brought it. The whole visit I had Donovan's Jersey Thursday stuck in head, along with the notion that the only way to rid of it would be to listen to it. On my iPod.

Nearing the end of the drive home, Joel played the Blue Rodeo album that reminds me of my parents. I faked sleep. I miss the buggers. I really miss Mata dog. Looking at the new clothes I've bought, they lack one thing. Mata hair. It's just not right.

I visited my grandma yesterday and it warmed my heart to see a little bowl of Werther's Originals. Wedding photos of all of her sons placed around her own. She had one photo of herself at the age of six and it was rather shocking, the resemblance of her and I! I don't want to grow up. The way I see it: You are born and you are beautiful and then you get ugly and die. What a poor belief... Oh well. Before we visited we got her an Iced Cappuccino and I don't think she liked it much.

Last night my daddy told me that I write like Jack Kerouac and It made me very happy.

In revision of my summer so far, I can predict that all it will amount to is the feeling of wind through unwashed, knotty hair whilst riding a crappy bicycle and hives from overexposure to the sun and dry grass. Seem exciting? Not at all. Seem like the idealistic summer I had planned? Frankly, yes. I'm beginning to think that I set myself up for this bland holiday, but that news is greeted with a very blasé, unmoved, apathetic Severn.

This entry is mainly because my father told me what I mentioned first-off, but also of a bought of insomnia and movie-watching. Thankfully due to writing this entry, I was treated with the sight of a lightening night sky, reminding me of how the sun will rise soon. Now, with that thought I am faced with the decision to either A) finish off this entry and sleep, or B) find other useless things to do until the sun is due to rise (I'll check the approximate time of rising on www.accuweather.com) and then feast my eyes upon it. Of course, the major con to plan B is going a night without sleep and for not good reason other than to see the sun rise. But REALLY, should I be ashamed of such hedonism? It's MY summer, for Christ's sake.

The sun will rise at 5:08 AM today, Friday the 27th (Wow, 27th already?) of June. (Thankfully it is not July yet...)

Now, for a much anticipated update on my lozenge situation:
While reckless, I dumbly decided to take off the wrappers on all the lozenges because all I was picking up were the stupid flavours: Honey-lemon and eucalyptus. I yearned to find another cranberry or blackcurrant. So I take off all of these wrappers to find I have 40 undesirably flavoured lozenges and only 4 good-tasting lozenges.
I made a pyramid of them on my coffee table. It was rather impressive until I dumbly wrecked it.

I am not happy.

Right now I'm munching on lozenges. I couldn't decide which flavor I wanted, so I bought every flavour of bentasil possible. I then emptied all the packets into a bowl so each time I grab for a lozenge it is a suprise!
... Too bad I always tend to grab for either a eucalyptus one or a honey-lemon one. I am not fond of either those flavors and I'd much rather prefer a cranberry or grape one.

I'm going on the Spain-France-Holland trip with my school in spring break 2009. I'm pretty excited. Most of the places we're going, I have been before... But thankfully they were my favorite places of my first Europe trip in 2005.

I recently hung my great grandmother's b&w portrait up on my bare wall, where I was planning on tacking up a poster of Escher's Eye. The good morning comes like a hit and run with marmalade sun for everyone.

Sitting at the breakfast table with a fish-eye view of the world, with mom, dad, Vince, Liz and Aunt Christie surrounding me, ordering that I finish my days-old lunch of meat ravioli in a garlic alfredo sauce... Terrifying.

Browsing in a big-box hardware store, my soul mate, Devon Bergstrom and I bump into each other, but it is completely wrong... He is ugly, mean and disfigured and I am so disappointed. But I sense and feel and know that he is the one for me and I am just going to have to live with that and the jerky, ugly version of him for the rest of my life.

Singing Wild Thing by The Kinks while uncle Peter plays the guitar and Carlo and Nicolai dance and stomp like Tom Connors, massaging my tired biceps after holding a sleeping Nico for two hours at the tennis club, while christening my new blouse with baby slobber, lint rolling my peacoat on the pantry door while tons of bodies are scurrying around looking for purses, jackets and cameras, trying not to giggle while the priest mispronounces my grandma's name over and over, trying not to giggle when the discarded match dish gets lit aflame! Transferring suitcases, sandwiches and orchids from car to car, confusing cousin Braxton with the whereabouts of the jones sodas, letting cousin Alex know my mother wants another shot of sour apple vodka, helping mom drain her lymphatic tube into aunt Christie's toilet only to find it isn't working, driving past Hycroft Manor and imagining I'll once be married there, helping mom put her earrings in and trying over and over to close the clasp on her bracelet, heart to hearts with Brendan, eating 439583409 mini smoked salmon sandwiches and not regretting it, hugging and consoling a drunk aunt Deborah...

I have been living very simply the past week, it is making me happy. I am happy that I have been getting by in sweats and sweaters all week. (I even wore my pyjamas to the grocery store! Fashion faux pas!) My hair is up in an everlasting high pony, bangs out of the way with bobby pins. Makeupless. I've watched countless movies on the movie channels and I get cutely cranky when nothing entertaining is on. I am happy that I can say I have better things to do than go out with the usual crowd and watch shallow boys play video games. Snnnore.

What a weird Friday. The boy I used to like so much decided to fuck around with my head... Again. His and hers donairs, holding doors open for me, paying for my food, glow bowling, sharing secret looks... Out of the ordinary is an understatement. It felt so much like a date, I didn't know if I wanted to go 'Yippee!' or if I wanted to go home and cry.

Today dad and I made our gingerbread house. It was so cute.

I miss the freedom and recklessness of summer. A new school year was fun until people settled in, and now we are just left with boring classes, the usual health threats and the crave for the next year to come. What a forlorn cycle, it always dissapoints those who are hopeful (like myself, sadly.) So until the repetitive high school years pass on I plan on searching for neat people to share with and things to occupy my time with.

I feel empty. The daily routine is getting insistent, I am feeling smaller and smaller. I almost feel as if a personality change is in order. I want to become equivocal, unconventional, a little flighty even. I know stable friends will be out, but since when were they really 'in'? A larger vocabulary will be put in use, I'd prefer to not use slang anymore. I am bored with myself! Hilarious. This seems to happen at least once a year. I suppose it's healthy, or I would like to think it is. Maybe it is true, what some people have said, about me 'always having to be different.' If so, I don't really mind. At least I have determination.

It wasn't until I reached my front door that I realized I had forgotten my keys at home and was locked out. So with the 30 minutes I had until my mother got home to let me in, I looked around the front yard. Found many snails, slugs and anthills... Realized that our jack o'lanterns (Yes, we haven't composted them yet...) are housing mosquitoe colonies (or tribes, whatever) I don't even see why they are even alive right now, it has been so cold these nights! Somehow the little buggers are still thriving... Unlike the plants. They are all dead or wilting, covered by a a great big layer of maple leaves in red and orange. It's pretty and humbling.
